+ Q&A with director Max Hattler

Royal College of Art graduate Max Hattler has shown his experimental animation short films at hundreds of film, arts and music festivals worldwide including onedotzero, Resfest, Annecy, Rotterdam, Edinburgh and Animafest Zagreb. He has won prizes at the London International Animation Festival, Videofestival Bochum, Darklight Film Festival, London Short Film Festival, and others. Max has made music videos and tour visuals for several bands including Basement Jaxx (for their 2009 tour, which came to Jersey Live this summer) and The Egg, and he has performed live audio-visual sets at Filmfest Dresden, The Big Chill, Media Art Friesland Festival and London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts, and many others.

Max lives and works in London and Germany, and teaches animation at Goldsmiths College and at the University of East London (where he is also doing a Professional Doctorate in Fine Art).

Max says “I am interested in the space between abstraction and figuration, where storytelling is freed from the constraints of traditional narrative. My work contemplates microcosms, moments, atmospheres. While my films tend to be without dialogue, they explore the relationship between sound, music and the moving image.”

Dazed & Confused magazine called him one of “three of the world’s most exciting young animators”
